Stuff happens. The lining of your favorite handbag gets soiled
from general usage and stained by a leaking cosmetic, an uncapped
ink pen, a spilt beverage, etc.
In most cases, these soils and stains can be removed through gentle
hand-cleaning.
On occasion, however, the accumulated soil and/or stains are so
heavy that no amount of hand-cleaning is going to return the lining
to "like new condition".
Maybe it's time to consider replacing the lining.
This was the dilemma faced by one of our clients whose
once-gorgeous white Chanel leather handbag had deteriorated due to,
let's just say, inattentive usage.
It just happened that our client is a frequent visitor to New York
City. She decided to take her handbag with her and to discuss the
cleaning of her handbag with the Chanel cleaning/repair specialist
at Chanel's 57th Street branch.
There were some major issues:
* The exterior leather was stained, scuffed and
scratched and displayed a film of blackish dirt throughout
* The handles were heavily soiled and the leather
"paint" was peeling off.
* The edges around the rim of the opening and all four
corners were heavily soiled, scuffed and scratched.
* The linings of the 2 major interior compartments and
the 2 small cosmetic pouches were heavily stained and soiled.
The Chanel cleaning/repair specialist's verdict was predictable: it
was highly unlikely that the handbag could be restored to anywhere
near "like-new" condition.
A few months later the client stopped by our facility to drop off a
formal dress for cleaning. After seeing all the cleaned handbags
waiting for collection by other clients, she announced, with some
degree of excitement: "I've got a project for you. I'll be back in
an hour!"
She returned with the white Chanel leather handbag.
After examining the handbag, we informed her that we believed that
we could restore the exterior. The lining, however, was another
issue. The likelihood that we could achieve similar results with
the lining was remote. We suggested that she consider replacing all
the interior linings with a white, heavy duty duck cloth (we have
white, cream, natural and an array of other colors in stock).
Furthermore, she would not lose the Chanel leather logo and the
original Chanel zippers and zipper pulls.
She agreed.
Two weeks later, we had completed the project. The before and after
photos reflecting the transformation can be seen below:

By the way, if you're looking for a handbag cleaning specialist,
please remember this: All handbags, purses, wallets and backpacks
should be cleaned BY HAND. Never BY MACHINE. And, then, only by a
cleaner who specializes in these accessories. And, the only way to
ensure that the cleaner does, in fact, specialize in these
accessories is to make sure that the cleaner has a FULL TIME
handbag and purse cleaner ON PREMISES.
RAVE FabriCARE is the only dry cleaner in Arizona and one of the
very few in the USA that employs a full time handbag cleaner whose
sole job is to hand clean handbags, purses, wallets and backpacks.
Unlike other dry cleaners, we'd never clean by machine and we'd
never send your accessories to outside third parties for cleaning.
That way we're able to deliver the very best technologically
achievable results and return your items, in most cases, in a week
and a half to two weeks.
