On October 12, 2012 post on the on-line version of the Wall
Street Journal included the following sub-heading: "... racing
stripes turn the classic luxury handbag into a smart and sporting
accessory."
The post reminded me of a Goyard handbag we just cleaned and
restored for one of our clients.
A few years back, she had purchased a Goyard Goyardine canvas
handbag from the Goyard store in San Francisco. Naturally, she had
it customized with handpainted initials and racing stripes.
The handbag became one of her favorite "traveling" handbags and
the four corners took a beating. Eventually, they developed
holes.
To "fix" the problem, a local shoe repair facility advised her
to add four leather corners to the handbag.
A few months later, she brought the handbag to us for cleaning
and restoration. In passing, she mentioned that she thought that
the shoe repair facility had done a relatively poor job on the
corners and asked for our advice.
We agreed with her assessment. The corners were of poor quality
leather and the "paint" job on the corners was inconsistently
applied and didn't match the color of the original leather
trim.
There were 2 choices:
- Remove the replacement corners and replace them with high
quality leather corners that matched the original leather in
texture and color.
- Leave the replacement corners intact and re-dye the corners to
match the original leather.
She selected alternative #2 and gave us the go ahead to do
whatever was necessary to clean and restore the handbag inside and
out.
