Last week, the Wall Street Journal published an interesting article entitled " Giving Well-Worn Luxury Handbags Some TLC".

For the purpose of the article, the Wall Street Journal shipped 4 different well-worn luxury handbags to 4 different handbag cleaners and evaluated the results.

One of those handbags was a Louis Vuitton brown monogrammed coated canvas tote with natura-colored cowhide leather trim.

Interestingly enough, we had just completed the cleaning and restoration of a Louis Vuitton Babylone tote a few days earlier. So my curiosity was more than peaked.

Many of you already know that Louis Vuitton handbags, purses, wallets and backpacks with brown monogrammed coated canvas and natural-colored cowhide leather develop numerous condition-related problems as a result of normal usage. These problems include:

  • The brown monogrammed coated canvas can become grimy.
  • The natural-colored cowhide leather can get scratched and scuffed.
  • The natural-colored cowhide leather can stain quite easily, even by water.
  • The cowhide leather straps can easily discolor due to contact with body oils and perspiration from the hands.
  • The inside lining can get stained by cosmetics, pens, candy, beverages and the like.

Anyhow, back to our client's Babylone tote ...

We received an email from a potential client in Connecticut asking for our advice on the cleaning of her tote. She told us that she had purchased it on line and that the seller had described it as "fair condition; pre-owned; water staining on leather, red stains on lining." She also included some color photos that illustrated the seller's description.

We then called the potential client assuring her that we believed that we could achieve good results. We asked her to ship it to us, using our Nationwide Clean By Mail Service.

About a week later the tote arrived. Her instructions were quite clear: return the tote to as close to original condition as was technically feasible. A few days later commenced our work. A week later we called our client and informed her that we were ready to ship.

The before and after photos below reflect the transformation.

Prices on the cleaning and reconditioning (inside and out) of brown monogrammed coated canvas handbags, purses and backpacks with natural-colored cowhide leather start at $125.00. Turnaround time is 1 to 2 weeks from the date of receipt.

By the way, if you're looking for a handbag cleaning specialist, please remember this: All handbags, purses, wallets and backpacks should be cleaned BY HAND. Never BY MACHINE. And, then, only by a cleaner who specializes in these accessories. And, the only way to ensure that the cleaner does, in fact, specialize in these accessories is to make sure that the cleaner has a FULL TIME handbag and purse cleaner ON PREMISES.

RAVE FabriCARE is the only dry cleaner in Arizona and one of the very few in the USA that employs a full time handbag cleaner whose sole job is to hand clean handbags, purses, wallets and backpacks. Unlike other cleaners, we'd never clean by machine and we'd never send your accessories to outside third parties for cleaning. That way we're able to deliver the very best technologically achievable results and return your items, in most cases, in a week and a half to two weeks.
